Markell Inspects I-495 Bridge, Penn State BB Gun Scare, NJ Smoking Age

Delaware Governor Jack Markell joined DelDOT officials to check out the I-495 bridge closure which is shutdown because of tilting support columns. Once he came back, he announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has approved $2 million in emergency relief funds for this bridge. Four sets of support columns on the I-495 bridge in Wilmington are tilting. One pier so bad that the top is two feet out of line with the bottom. The schedule for reopening is somewhere between weeks and months.

Authorities say a BB gun caused a weapon scare at Penn State’s Abington campus on Thursday. The campus was placed on a brief lockdown after a 911 call was placed, reporting a gunman carrying a rifle around the campus. The school sent out a text message alerting its students to shelter in place and that got the attention of the one who had the BB gun. The threat was minimized when police realized the reported riffle was only a BB gun brought in by a student who wanted to show his friends and had since gone home. Police brought that man and two others into custody for questioning.

Two New Jersey lawmakers want to raise the minimum smoking age to 21. A bill would raise the minimum age for buying tobacco products and e-cigarette devices as well as regular cigarettes. Senator Codey says the legislation might help stop teenagers from picking up a bad habit. The legislation cleared the Senate health committee on Thursday by a 6-2 vote with one abstention.
