Affordable Care Sign Ups Higher Than Expected, Corbett Challenger Bumped, Local 8 Carpenters Strike

Nearly half a million in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, during the six-month enrollment period. Official figures showed sign-up was higher than expected. Federal health officials say more than 8 million Americans got insurance between October first and mid-April, the end of the grace period following the close of open enrollment. That includes 14,000 people in Delaware, 160,000 in New Jersey and 318,000 in Pennsylvania.

Governor Tom Corbett’s challenger in the Republican primary later this month has been knocked off the ballot. The state Supreme Court has overturned a lower court ruling that allowed self-described independent Republican Bob Guzzardi to remain on the GOP primary ballot. His removal from the ballot now clears the path for Corbett to secure the Republican nomination.

The Local 8 Carpenters Union at the Pennsylvania Convention Center is on strike and on the picket line after contract negotiations with the center’s management fell apart. Gregory Fox with The Pennsylvania Convention Center authority says the center is in the process of trying to make their venue more lucrative than other major cities. Fox says they have no scheduled talks with the Carpenters Local 8 Union at this time and that negotiations with the union could take a while, but he’s hopeful that it will be resolved soon.

Weather, May 2

Mostly Sunny. High 67 in Center City.
