Bridgegate Report Clears Christie, Seniority Rules Scrapped, Dog Walker Watch

A review due out soon clears Governor Christie of involvement in the Bridgegate scandal, according to a report in The New York Times. But the law firm behind the investigation was hired by the administration, and their findings come at taxpayer expense. Despite the million-dollar minimum price tag, the Times reports the inquiry doesn’t include interviews with several key players. The lead attorney says the governor allowed his own email and his iPhone to be searched as part of the thousands of other emails and documents they reviewed.

The School District of Philadelphia is scrapping teacher seniority rules, starting next September. Superintendent William Hite has announced plans to impose a system this fall allowing principals to fill teacher vacancies without using seniority as the sole factor. Hite says under his plan, a committee of a school's principal, teachers and a parent will determine teacher staffing at each school. The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers has resisted changes to seniority rules, maintaining they were a time-earned protection against administration favoritism.

Lower Merion police are hoping pet owners, walking their dogs, will help them collar criminals. “Dog Walker Watch” a joint program just launched by police, and Community Watch President Matt Peskin, is recruiting dog walkers to help report suspicious, criminal activities in their neighborhoods. Peskin says the program, which he says is the first of its type, has already gotten dozens of volunteers on-line in just the first few days. Local dog owners greeted the program with enthusiasm, glad to be helping neighbors as they cared for their dogs.
