Scores of former gang leaders came together Wednesday in Northwest Philadelphia to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Imani pledge - the ceasefire promise that ended the years of gang wars that plagued the city during the 1960s and 70s. Wesley Wilson Bey was part of the gang at 21st and Norris Streets in North Philadelphia when he signed the “Imani” or faith pledge on January 1, 1974, a promise he’s kept for 40 years. Bey has left his gang banging ways behind. Today, he works as a barber and tailor. He’s a father, husband and minister. The event included a performance by Sonia Sanchez, as well as award presentations to warriors of peace.

The first winter storm of the new year remains on track to arrive in the Delaware Valley on Thursday night. A fast moving clipper type system currently located over the central U.S. will combine with a stronger low currently near the Gulf Coast. Where and when exactly the two systems phase into one will determine how much snow we receive. This phasing won’t take place until later on Thursday allowing for possible changes in the forecast. The steadiest and heaviest snow will continue overnight and end early Friday morning. At this point, we are currently thinking 3-6″ inches in the Philadelphia area and in New Jersey with 6+ inches in the Lehigh Valley and Poconos with higher amounts across Northeastern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey and New England. These amounts can still change depending on the storm development on Thursday. As the storm departs Friday it will turn brutally cold. Temperatures will not make it out of the teens Friday afternoon and wind chills will be below Zero at times Friday through Saturday morning.

Pat Kennedy, a retired Bucks county schoolteacher, started the Greater Philadelphia Diaper Bank in 2011, after learning that welfare programs give struggling mothers food but not diapers. Most daycares also require children to have their own disposable diapers. Pat donates diapers as much as she can — thousands each month. They’re hoping for even more support from corporations and businesses. For more information, visit: www.philadelphiadiaperbank.org
