Cory Booker Wins, U.S. Government Reopens, Corbett Releases $45 million for Philadelphia School Dist

Rising Democratic star Cory Booker has won a special election to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate. The Newark mayor defeated Republican Steve Lonegan in an abbreviated campaign of stark policy and style differences. Booker will become the first black senator from New Jersey. He is filling the seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

The Senate has voted to avoid a financial default and reopen the government after a 16-day partial shutdown. The vote was 81-18 Wednesday night. Senate leaders announced a last-minute agreement Wednesday to avert a threatened Treasury default and reopen the government. The Dow Jones industrial average soared on the news that the threat of default was fading, flirting with a 200-point gain in morning trading.

Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett today made a surprise announcement that the state is releasing $45 million for the School District of Philadelphia, money without which the school district said it could not operate to the end of the current school year. The money had been approved by the state legislature this year but held up by the Corbett administration, which said the money was contingent on whether the school district obtained sufficient concessions from the Philadelphia teachers’ union. Schools superintendent Dr. William Hite says the money will allow the district to rehire 400 employees, including 80 counselors, support staff and some teachers, and fund music and athletics through the full year.

Weather, October 17

Mostly Cloudy…late shower possible. High 75 in Center City.
