The Plateau Offers a Mellow Rock Choice

PHILADELPHIA - Over the weekend, a new Mellow Rock radio station made its debut on iRadioPhilly. "The Plateau" launched with Hall and Oates, "Fall in Philadelphia" and is rolling out mellow rock favorites from the 1970's. The Plateau is iRadioPhilly's 21st radio station featuring a continuous stream of tunes reminiscent of the era of peace, free love and Be-Ins at Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau.

The Plateau includes artists in the Folk, Singer/Songwriter and Soft Rock genres. In the 70’s many of these artists were poets and philosophers who put words and ideals to music. According to iRadioPhilly deejay, Michael Tearson, “There are so many songs from singer-songwriters that have become touchstones in our lives, often still guiding how we live our lives. The Plateau will gather music from this rich vein of music that speaks to people's very spirit.”

Music lovers who came of age in the 1970’s remember when artists like Linda Ronstadt, America, Carole King, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and Harry Chapin filled Philadelphia’s radio airwaves. iRadioPhilly Managing Partner Tom Kelly comments, “On today’s FM radio playlists, most of these artists and songs are gone, replaced by music that appeals to a younger audience. There are not enough FM radio stations in Philadelphia to deliver the music diversity that listeners want. With internet radio, iRadioPhilly can fill the voids in FM’s limited menu.”

The Plateau is similar to SiriusXM’s, “The Bridge” but with a distinctively Philly flavor. The Plateau will offer more tracks from local favorites who developed their craft in the 1970’s performing for baby boomers at venues such as the Main Point, the Second Fret, the Tower, the Spectrum, Valley Forge Music Fair, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, college campuses and Fairmount Park’s Belmont Plateau. Kelly continues, “Hall and Oates, Billy Joel, Todd Rundgren and Jim Croce were familiar to Philly audiences long before the rest of the country discovered them.”

Michael Tearson shares this memory, “There was a night at the Second Fret in Philadelphia when Joni Mitchell introduced a song she'd written the night before at the apartment of Joy, the manager of the club. This song was based on Saul Bellow's “Henderson the Rain King” and it was the story of how an African chieftain had been taken for a plane ride. He then could say that his life was complete having seen the other side of the clouds. Of course the song was "Both Sides Now," and hearing Joni Mitchell play it was an unforgettable experience.”
