NJ Cell Phone Confiscation, Dr. Werther Oxycodone Conviction, Woodbury Home Multiple Fires

A bill proposed in the New Jersey State Senate would permit police officers responding to a car accident to confiscate the cell phones of the drivers involved. The bill would also increase the penalty for sending text messages while driving. According to the bill, under current New Jersey law the penalty for driving while illegally using a cell phone is a $100 fine.

A Montgomery County doctor has been convicted of conspiracy, money laundering and illegal distribution of oxycodone that federal authorities said resulted in the overdose death of a man. A federal court jury on Tuesday convicted 74-year-old Dr. Norman Werther of Horsham on several hundred counts, including distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death. Authorities said they believed Werther helped put 700,000 oxycodone tablets on the street from 2009 until his initial arrest in 2011. They accused him of illegally prescribing at least 180 oxycodone tablets to the overdose victim in the summer of 2010 before the man’s death in Montgomery County.

Officials say three firefighters and one person were injured in two separate fires at the same Woodbury home on Tuesday. Fire crews were called out to a two-alarm fire at about 5:12 p.m. along the unit block of Penn Street. Two firefighters were taken to Inspira Woodbury Medical Center.
Fire crews were called out to the same address at about at 11:49 a.m. for a fire. A firefighter and a civilian were injured. It is unclear if the latest fire is related to the earlier blaze.
