NFL Concussions Case, Toms River Child Shooting, Philadelphia School Board Hearing

A federal judge in Philadelphia today hears arguments on whether to dismiss a class action lawsuit accusing the NFL of hiding the risks of concussions. Players want their case to remain in federal court, where they can use the rules of discovery to get a look at NFL files to find out what the league knew about the effects of repetitive brain injuries. The NFL, though, is expected to argue that players’ health and safety were covered under collective bargaining agreements — so the matter should be heard by a labor arbitrator.

Police say a six-year-old was accidentally shot by a four-year-old neighbor in Ocean County, New Jersey on Monday night. Toms River Police say they received the call at about 6:42 p.m. According to authorities, the six-year-old was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center.

The Philadelphia School Board held a special hearing at their North Broad Street headquarters on Monday night, to take public comment on the proposed closure of Dimner Beeber Middle School and M. H. Stanton Elementary School. Beeber students would be sent to Overbrook High, while Stanton students would be moved to Duckrey Elementary. Parents, staff and students pleaded with school administrators and the School Reform Commission to reconsider the closures and their approach.
