Philadelphia Workers Comp Up 25%, Hitman Lewis Pleas For Less Time, La Salle Student Raped

The Philadelphia City Controller, after an audit of the Workers Compensation Program, says taxpayers are footing the bill for skyrocketing workers' comp claims. In 2011, the city of Philadelphia paid nearly $54-million for workers' comp claims – a 25% increase from what it paid five years earlier.

The defense suggests the minimum sentence for an admitted hitman cooperating with authorities in a fatal 2004 firebombing may be less than it seems based on his plea deal. Witness Lamont Lewis has admitted to committing 11 murders, including the arson murders of a witness’s family, but the defense contends he is lying about others to help himself. Lamont Lewis has testified that he set the fire with his cousin, Robert Merritt, on orders from his drug gang boss Kaboni Savage. It’s part of the deal and Lewis, who could have faced the death penalty, will be sentenced later to at least 40 years, up to life in prison.

La Salle University officials have confirmed that a student was raped on Easter Sunday. The assault reportedly happened on 10th Street, more than a mile off campus. La Salle says the suspects are not affiliated with the university in any way and that Philadelphia police are investigating the incident.
