PennDOT's Pothole Season, Fen-Phen Fraud Case, NJ FEMA Funds Awarded

It's going to a bad pothole season, worse than last year, according to PennDOT. The cause is a wet winter with freezing temperatures at night, then thawing during the day. PennDOT spends $2-million a year fixing potholes and roadway patching. If you want to report a pothole call 1-800-FIX ROAD. City and township roads are not under PennDOT’s jurisdiction.

A federal judge rejected a defense request for house arrest and sentenced a 79-year-old Florida cardiologist to six years in prison for fraud linked to the infamous fen-phen diet drugs and national settlement funds. Prosecutor Paul Shapiro says Doctor Abdur Razzak Tai took fees for examining patients who suspected heart damage from fen-phen and that Doctor Tai diagnosed heart damage again and again — even when there was none.

Two New Jersey towns will share more than $3.4 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to partially reimburse them for debris cleanup costs they incurred after Superstorm Sandy. The funding for Brigantine and Piscataway was announced Tuesday night. FEMA will give Piscataway roughly $1.8 million, while Brigantine will get about $1.6 million.
