3rd Arrest in Wilmington Police Officer Shooting, New Nutter Tax Collection, $25 Mil Gift to Penn

Authorities in Wilmington, Delaware arrested a third suspect Monday night in the weekend shooting of a police officer. Justin Wilkers was shot in the face Sunday afternoon after a traffic stop and ensuing car chase. He is in serious but stable condition and was scheduled for surgery today.

Mayor Michael Nutter has announced new efforts to crack down on those who avoid paying their property taxes. Efforts include spending $25-million dollars for a new computer system to track deadbeats, and to analyze who should be targeted for collection efforts, as well as $15-million to staff a new call center. Nutter predicted that by spending $40-million now, the city could bring in an extra $260-million dollars in tax revenue over five years. Officials say the city is currently owed $518-million dollars in back taxes dating back a decade.

The University of Pennsylvania has received $25 million to create a new home for its departments of political science and economics. The gift announced Monday comes from Ronald Perelman, a philanthropist and chairman of cosmetics giant Revlon Inc. He’s also a trustee and alumnus of Penn. The funds will allow the departments to move into a building together in the heart of campus.
