Nutter Property Tax Overhaul, Atlantic County Bomb Plot Student Arrested, Paulsboro Scammers

Mayor Nutter held a closed-door briefing for City Council members Tuesday on next year's planned overhaul of Philadelphia property taxes. Sources say the total value of all city properties was put at just under $100-billion. Under the new system, some homeowners will come out ahead, while others are expected to pay higher property taxes in 2014. Residents will know their own individual assessment by February.

Police in Atlantic County have arrested a student after explosive material was reportedly found inside his home. Police removed the 16-year-old boy from Cedar Creek High School Tuesday afternoon after school officials became concerned about his behavior. Police then searched the boy’s home on the 300 block of East Spencer Lane and found several electronic parts and several types of chemicals that when mixed together, could cause an explosion. The student was charged with possession of a weapon – an explosive device. As a precaution, bomb-sniffing dogs swept the school but found nothing.

Gloucester County officials are warning Paulsboro residents about scammers going door-to-door. The scammers are telling residents if they signed a release saying they would not file a claim over the derailment and vinyl chloride leak, they would get $800 cash. The goal is to obtain personal information during that process that could be used to compromise them for identity theft.
