Michael Jr. Escapes Lethal Injection, Retired Officer Faces Luring Charges, Nesquik Recalled

A condemned inmate escaped lethal injection Thursday for the murder of a teenage girl after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the execution should be halted. Just hours after a federal appeals court put a stop to the preparations, the high court agreed, preventing Hubert Lester Michael Jr. from becoming the first person put to death in the state since 1999. Michael, who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting Trista Elizabeth Eng in 1993, had been taken earlier in the day to Rockview State Prison in Bellefonte, home of the execution chamber.

A retired police officer was arrested and charged in connection with a luring attempt involving an 8-year-old girl last month in the city’s Roxborough neighborhood. Police say 72-year-old Leo Haley of the 4300 block of Lauriston Street was taken into custody Thursday following an investigation into the October 17th incident.
Haley is charged with Unlawful Restraint, Terroristic Threats, Luring a Child into a Vehicle and Harassment.

Nestle USA announced Thursday that it was voluntarily recalling some of its Nesquik chocolate powder due to a possible risk of salmonella exposure. The company said it will be recalling 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce canisters of Nesquik that were sold across the country in early October and have an expiration date of October 2014. Nestle says the recall comes after an ingredient supplier recalled some of their calcium carbonate used in Nesquik because of salmonella contamination. There have not been any reports of illnesses associated with Nesquik.
