Sandusky Sentenced, Mayfair Million Dollar Heroin Bust, Roxy Theater Lives On

Nearly four months after his child sex abuse conviction in a case that rocked Penn State, former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced to no less than 30 years and no more than 60 years in prison Tuesday. He was given credit for 112 days of time served and must pay the cost of prosecution and $1,706 in restitution. The sentence essentially guarantees that Sandusky will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Philadelphia police seized more than $1 million worth of heroin from a Northeast Philadelphia home Tuesday night. Undercover officers from the police department’s Narcotics Unit removed the heroin along with a pound of cocaine from the row home on the 2900 block of McKinley Street in Mayfair. The home was being used as a stash house for high level dealers looking to sell the drugs to street level dealers. Two men have been arrested.

Philadelphia’s Roxy Theater will become the new home of the Philadelphia Film Society. The Roxy’s owner announced late last month that he was ending the operator’s lease and many feared Center City would lose its last independent movie theater. But John Ciccone who bought the small, two-screen theater four years ago, says he wanted to revive the theater’s history as a venue for independents and he says the film society can do that. Film society executive director Andrew Greenblatt says they’ll be renovating the theater and converting it to digital.
