Hundreds of family, friends, firefighters, fellow first responders, and other well wishers came to pay respects tonight to Philadelphia's first female firefighter killed in the line of duty. 36-year-old Joyce Craig lost her life battling a blaze earlier this week at a house fire in West Oak Lane. Craig was among the first to enter the home and became trapped in the basement when a retreat was ordered. She was an 11-year veteran of the force and leaves behind a 16-year-old son and 16-month-old daughter. A second viewing will be held on Saturday morning before funeral services, both at Batchelor Brothers Funeral Home at 7112 North Broad Street. The viewing begins at 8 a.m. following by the funeral at 10 a.m. A memorial fund has been set up for Craig's children. Checks can be made payable to the "Local 22-Joyce Craig Memorial Fund" and mailed to 901 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. The Philadelphia Fire Department was established as a paid professional department in 1871, but traces back to volunteer departments in the city all the way back to 1736.

Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ has announced that it has installed two gender neutral bathrooms on campus. These bathrooms are available for anyone to use, regardless of gender identity. The school responded to LGBT advocacy groups on campus who showed growing support for the gender neutral bathrooms. Both sides see it as a step towards inclusion and acceptance of the transgender community. LGTP advocates hope this could be a step towards a gender neutral housing policy at the public university in the future. Private liberal arts Haverford College in Pennsylvania has had an official fully gender neutral/co-ed housing policy since 2000. This includes all housing types for upperclassmen.

Richard Stockton College in Galloway, NJ, has completed it's $18 million purchase of the former Showboat Casino in Atlantic City. The college, located just on the mainland from Atlantic City, has released it's general plans for it's “Island Campus.” The casino floor will be turned into classrooms, offices, etc. Two of the former hotel towers will be transformed into student housing, while the third will be operated as a hotel. The school, working with the state, hopes to develop the area around the building by attracting local businesses to create a campus. Hopefully they'll bring in more than just late night pizza, chicken wing, and cell phone stores that feed off college students. Stockton expects to have the campus running by next fall.
