U.S. Open Security Reviews; NJ Flags Half Staff; Boston Marathon Bombs Used Pressure Cookers

What happened in Boston is forcing law enforcement to take another look at their security plans for the U.S. Open in June. The historic Merion Golf Club will soon host one of golf's most prestigious championships, the U.S. Open. But the ripple effects from what unfolded in Boston on Monday carry additional concern for law enforcement.

The USGA already had tight security restrictions in place prior to Monday. Spectators will have to go through magnetometers at controlled entry points. No cell phone or large packs will be allowed. And containers or coolers will be prohibited except for medical or infant needs. To be clear, there’s been no threats made and USGA officials are confident the proper security measures are being taken citing the tournaments long standing partnerships with law enforcement.

Gov. Chris Christie has ordered flags at all New Jersey state buildings to be flown at half-staff to honor those killed and injured in the bombings at the Boston Marathon. The executive order issued Tuesday night calls for the flags to be lowered on Thursday. Besides honoring the victims, Christie says the flag lowering also marks “the suffering inflicted upon the city of Boston” by the bombings.

Federal agents zeroed in Tuesday on how the Boston Marathon bombing was carried out — with kitchen pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails and other lethal shrapnel — but said they still didn’t know who did it and why. President Barack Obama branded the attack an act of terrorism but said officials don’t know “whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organization, foreign or domestic, or was the act of a malevolent individual.”
