Malvern Police Shooting Ruled Justified; Court Rule Ballots to be Counted; Phillies Fire Joe Girardi

Chester County authorities say that a fatal police-involved shooting last week in Malvern was justified after an investigation. It happened around 11 a.m. May 19 on the 800 block of Charleston Greene. Officers responded to a well being check after the woman reportedly was having a mental heath crisis and sent a "goodbye" message. Police arrived and found the woman holding a gun. "One officer pursued her into the house to gain control of the gun, and a struggle ensued. The woman had her finger on the trigger and waved the gun around at the officers. Seeing that the officer was unable to secure the weapon and believing that their lives were in danger of imminent serious bodily injury or death, another officer ordered the officer struggling with her to move away. The woman stood up and aimed the gun at police. From approximately five feet away, the officer shot the woman three times. Life-saving measures were immediately administered by police, but the woman died shortly after. The entire incident lasted 57 seconds."

A Pennsylvania state court ruled on Thursday, 6/2, that counties should count undated mail-in ballots in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Commonwealth Court Judge Renee Cohn Jubelirer ruled that the controversial ballots should be kept separate. A pending ruling in a separate case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court could reverse her decision. David McCormick wants all the ballots counted. He trails Dr. Mehmet Oz by around 900 votes in the race. State law requires that a handwritten date be present next to a voter's signature on the outside of the ballot. The Republican National Committee and the state Republican party has also opposed counting the controversial votes. A statewide recount in underway in the tight race.

UPDATE: Dave McCormick has conceded the race to Dr. Oz.

The Philadelphia Phillies have fired manager Joe Girardi. Bench coach Rob Thomson will take over as interim manager for the rest of the season. Quality assurance coach Mike Calitri has been promoted to bench coach. Coaching assistant Bobby Meachum has also been relieved of duties. Girardi was hired prior to the 2020 season and led the Phillies for 2+ seasons. His record with the club was 132-141. (2020 was a COVID-19 shortened season)

"It has been a frustrating season for us up until this point, as we feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities," said President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski. "While all of us share the responsibility for the shortcomings, I felt that a change was needed and that a new voice in the clubhouse would give us the best chance to turn things around. I believe we have a talented group that can get back on track, and I am confident that Rob, with his experience and familiarity with our club, is the right man to lead us going forward."
