Home Explodes in Pottstown; Dirt Bike Rider Surrenders in Skateboarder Death; Philly Starbucks Union

Five people have been killed and two injured after a home exploded in Pottstown, Montgomery County, on Thursday night, 5/26. It happened around 8 p.m. in the area of Hale Street and Butler Avenue. Two homes were completely destroyed and several others damaged. One of the injured is having surgery and the other is listed in critical but stable condition. The cause of the explosion in still under investigation. The Pottstown Police are receiving help from the Pennsylvania State Police and ATF. Officials believe this is an isolated incident. Pottstown School District schools were closed on Friday.

UPDATE: The victims have been identified. 4 of the 5 fatal victims are children. The deceased are: 67-year-old Francine White, 13-year-old Alana Wood, 12-year-old Jeremiah White, 10-year-old Nehemiah White, and 8-year-old Tristan White. The two injured are: 44-year-old Eugene White and 32-year-old Kristina Matuzsan.

A dirt bike rider who was caught on surveillance video striking and killing a teenage skateboarder earlier this week has surrendered to police. 19-year-old Kevin Rubio of the 3200 block of N. Hancock Street is charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and related charges for the death of 17-year-old Jesus Gomez-Rosario. It happened on Sunday night, 5/15, around 10:30 p.m. on the 100 block of E Allegheny Avenue near Front Street in the Fairhill section. Gomez Rosario was riding his skateboard westbound on Allegheny. He was struck by Rubio who was riding a dirt bike eastbound at a high rate of speed while doing wheelies. Rosario was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition. On Tuesday, 5/17, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m.

Workers from four Starbucks locations in Philadelphia voted to unionize on Thursday morning, 5/26. Those locations include 1900 Market Street, 600 South 9th Street, 3400 Market, and 3400 Civic Center Boulevard. Workers at the 1945 Callowhill Street location rejected the union in their vote. Those employees in the pro-union locations will join Workers United, a SEIU affiliate. Now 92 Starbucks locations across the county have voted to unionize.
