Mayfair Slasher Denied Lower Bail, PA Unemployment Down and Out, Archdiocese to Announce Priest Fate

David Toledo, the Mayfair tire slasher, was back in court today to set a date for trial and to discuss his bail. His side pleaded with the judge to lower his bail from $260,000 saying that it was too high to afford, and citing his ties to the community and lack of prior record. Appearing on his behalf was his attorney, wife, and mother. The ADA argued that while he had ties to the community, it was that very community he is charged with terrorizing for months with his crimes. The judge denied lowering bail. Toledo's trial is set for July 12.

Pennsylvania's unemployment rate is down, showing signs of an improving economy. That's not necessarily good news for those who didn't land a job yet, because now PA no longer qualifies to receive the federally funded Extended Benefits program. That's those 13 extra weeks of unemployment after the regular 26 state plus a few dozen more of federal emergency weeks. This change will affect about 30,000 people. The last payable EB week ends May 12th.

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput will hold a news conference at 2pm on Friday presumably to announce the fate of about 2 dozen priests suspended over allegations that they sexually abused or acted inappropriately around minors. Chaput had a meeting will all Archdiocesan priests at Cardinal O'Hara High School yesterday to inform the clergy of the process, though no one shared details. The accused priests were put on administrative leave in February following the grand jury report accusing the Archdiocese of placing priests back into action and not properly following through on allegations.

In Sports, Phillies won this afternoon in Atlanta, 4-0. Joe Blanton pitched a peach of a game in Georgia needing only 88 pitches over 9 innings to shut out the Braves. Nix and Victorino Homered for the Phils
