A woman was beaten to death with two pipes in an Old City office building on Wednesday afternoon, 1/19. It happened just after 2 p.m. in Suite 800 on the 8th floor of the Regus building on the 300 block of Chestnut Street. 48-year-old Jeffery Stepien from Philadelphia entered the office and attacked 31-year-old Samantha Maag of Blenheim, New Jersey, who was sitting at the receptionist desk. When police arrived at the building, the suspect was getting off the elevator on the first floor. He was covered in blood and was carrying a bag with two metal pipes inside. They were approximately 2-feet long and 1-inch wide. They were also bloody. He was taken into custody. The victim was taken to Jefferson University Hospital with severe head injuries and defensive wounds to her hands and arms. She died a short time later. Police say that the victim and suspect knew each other and may have had conflicts in the past. The suspect leased at least one office on the 8th floor of the building and may have had a dispute about the rent. A motive has yet to be determined. There were at least 10 witnesses in the reception area.

Philadelphia City Councilmember Bobby Henon resigned his seat on Thursday, 1/20, effect 8 a.m. This comes 2 months after he was convicted of federal bribery and corruption charges alongside former IBEW Local 98 leader John Dougherty. Henon represented the 6th District since 2011. He faces 20 years in prison when sentenced next month. A special election will be held to fill his vacated seat. No date has been set. Ward leaders will nominate candidates to run in the special election. "I am grateful to the residents of the 6th District for allowing me to serve as Councilman for the past 10 years. I worked hard each and every day to be an outspoken and bold advocate for the hardworking people of the 6th district, but I could not have done it without the support and engagement of community leaders and residents," Henon write in his resignation letter.

Philadelphia Police diffused an hours long hostage situation in the Overbrook neighborhood on Wednesday evening, 1/19. It started around 7:30 p.m. on the 6100 block of West Columbia Avenue. Police responded to reports of a man with a gun. The 21-year-old suspect was inside the home with his 13-year-old female cousin. The suspect was streaming the standoff live on Instagram. Police saw that he was pointing the gun at the girl. After about three hours, officials were able to convince the man to let his cousin go. He surrendered a short time later. Police say the suspect may have been under the influence or dealing with mental issues. No one was injured.
