Injured Bald Eagle Recovering Well, Cherry Hill Teacher Put on Leave

The injured Bald Eagle found in a Broomall parking lot on April 17 is recovering well, but not 100 percent yet. The large bird was found by a maintenance man emptying the trash barely alive, but still breathing. It turns out the bird had been shot, then apparently hit by a car, and had lead poisoning. Case no. 0442 is now being treated at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Roxborough, where it can now stand but is still disoriented and can't yet fly in the outdoor flight cage it stays in and still gets hand fed. The larger question was where did it come from. There are 14 known nests in the area. Eagle pairs are monogamous and mate for life using the same nest sites year after year. The population has been growing in recent years; this bird has a tag that says he came from Connecticut.

The Cherry Hill teacher, Kelly Altenburg, who denies that she was present when any abusive or demeaning statements were made to an autistic student, was placed on paid leave yesterday by the school district. "I wanted to be proactive rather than reactive," superintendent Maureen Reusche said. "My primary focus is the instructional environment in the building." The audio of the incident was captured when Stuart Chaifetz, concerned over why his 10-year-old autistic son Aiken with communications disabilities had become combatant with school staff, sent him to school on Feb. 17 with an secret audio recorder in his pocket. Aiken's class is entirely for autistic students. Reusche says 4 people were assigned to that class that day - Altenburg, two educational aides, and an aide substitute. The substitute and one aide have been accused of making the remarks, the other aide did not act wrongly and is on leave. An investigation showed Altenberg was out of the room for some of recorded comments. *see below for Chaifez's youtube posts of the audio.

In Sports, Sixers start the NBA Playoffs Round 1 against the Chicago Bulls at 1pm. Phillies continue their home series against the Chicago Cubs at 7:05, Joe Blanton on the mound. Flyers vs. Devils Round 2 Game 1 tomorrow at 3 pm.
