Man Killed, Teen Injured in Shooting; Armored Truck Driver Stops Robber; Dirt Bike Rell Ride Out

An older man was killed and a 16-year-old was injured in a double shooting outside a high school in Philadelphia's Mayfair section on Monday afternoon, 10/18. It happened around 2:45 p.m. as classes were let out outside Abraham Lincoln High School on the 7400 block of Rowland Avenue. Two groups were fighting when a 21-year-old man pulled out a gun. A 16-year-old student at the school was shot in the back of the head as he fled the scene. 66-year-old Jeff Carter was simply driving by in his car when he was shot in the head. Both were taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital. Carter was pronounced dead at the hospital. The teen is in critical condition. Police arrested the 21-year-old shooter and another person. A weapon was recovered.

An armored truck driver fended off a would-be robber in North Philadelphia on Monday afternoon, 10/18. It happened outside Cousin's Supermarket on the 1900 block of North 5th Street. The driver was loading a Brink's truck when he was approached by a man wearing a mask and armed with a gun. The driver, who is also armed, began to shoot at the suspect. The attempted robber dropped his weapon and fled without any money.

Hundreds of off-road vehicles took to the streets this weekend in Philadelphia for an annual ride-out in honor of a fallen rider. 23-year-old Kyrell Tyler aka "Dirt Bike Rell" was shot and killed in October 2014. He had a large social media following and was extremely popular in the Philly dirt bike/ATV scene. All off-road vehicles are illegal to drive on Philadelphia streets, but that doesn't stop most from riding anyway. Police can do little but confiscate or write citations if they stop them. City Council is working on creating a designated off-road vehicle park that is safe, accessible, and gets vehicles out of the streets.
