SEPTA Searcing for Subway Arson Suspect; Judge Says Columbus Box Stays; Bridge Fire Delays Amtrak

SEPTA police are asking the public's help in identifying a suspect wanted for two arsons on the Broad Street Line. They both happened on Saturday night, 10/9. The first fire was set around 11:05 p.m. at the Susquehanna-Dauphin Station. The man used a lighter to set a shirt and a cone on fire. He then boarded a train heading southbound. The man got off the train at the Ellsworth-Federal Station. He set a trash can on fire at that station. No one was reported injured. If you have any information, call the SEPTA Transit Police Department at (215) 580-8111.

The plywood box surrounding the Christopher Columbus statue in Marconi Plaza will remain in place following a successful appeal by the City of Philadelphia. Judge Paula Patrick of the Court of Common Pleas issued an order on Friday morning, 10/8, telling the city to remove the covering on the monument located on South Broad Street. The city appealed that order saying, "We cannot, and have no intention to, remove the box at this time," said Acting Communications Director Kevin Lessard. "We continue to believe it is in the best interest and public safety of all Philadelphians that the statue remains secured in its box." On Saturday night, 10/9, Commonwealth Court ruled in favor of the city and put a stay on the removal of the box.

The city released this statement: "The City is grateful that the Commonwealth Court took the time to review this important matter tonight. Earlier today, the City of Philadelphia filed an Emergency Application to reinstate the stay and preserve the status quo-the box protecting the statue.

Just now, the Commonwealth Court reinstated the stay and overturned the Court of Common Pleas order from earlier today.

No action will be taken with respect to the statue at this time. Removing the plywood covering during this holiday weekend would pose a serious public safety risk."

A fire at a bridge in Delaware County forced SEPTA and Amtrak to suspended service for hours on Sunday. It happened around 6:30 a.m. at the old Folcroft Avenue Bridge in Folcroft. The bridge goes over tracks used by both Amtrak and SEPTA. It had caught fire and pieces of burning debris were falling onto the tracks below. Trains were stopped in both directions as crews put out the fire, removed the debris, and then secured the bridge. The bridge has been abandoned for years. The cause of the first is under investigation.
