Timothy Piazza Anti-Hazing Law NJ; MOVE Remains Investigation; Afghan Refugees Arriving in NJ

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a new anti-hazing law into effect on Monday, 8/23, named after New Jersey-native Timothy J. Piazza. Piazza was a 19-year-old sophomore engineering student at Penn State University in 2017 when he lost his life during a fraternity hazing ritual. Piazza and others were made to drink excessive amounts of alcohol in a short period. He fell several times, including down the stairs, and no one called for help until it was too late. The new bill increases criminal penalties for hazing that results in injury. The definition of hazing has been extended to include behavior beyond causing bodily injury, but also emotional harm and mental brutality. It also requires all public and private middle and high schools, as well as colleges and universities, to create anti-hazing policies and outline penalties.

An independent investigation into the handing of human remains from the MOVE bombing was released on Wednesday, 8/25. The 217-page report by the Tucker Law Group was paid for by the Penn Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. The skeletal remains had been sent to Penn from the Philadelphia Medical Examiner for analysis following the 1985 bombing. They eventually were taken to Princeton University and used as part of a course. The report said that the staff did not violate any "professional, ethical or legal standards." However, they exercised "extremely poor judgement and gross insensitivity."

At-risk Afghan refugees have begun to arrive at military bases in the United States including New Jersey. Those bases are Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey, Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, Fort Bliss in Texas, and Fort Lee in Virginia. More sites may be added as needed. Once they arrive at the bases, they get connected to a refugee resettlement organization like Nationalities Service Center or HIAS. The organization will help the refugee to find everything they need including housing, household goods, furniture, food, clothing, as well as job training and English classes. The bases will house and support the refugees initially.
