FDA Grants Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine Full Approval; NJ to Require Vaccines for PreK-12 Staff-Teachers

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted full approval to the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, 8/23. The mRNA vaccine had been given an emergency use authorization back in December 2020. Over 200 million doses have been administered since that initial authorization. This is the first COVID-19 vaccine to receive full approval from the FDA. This milestone could bring even more vaccine mandates as is marks a legal threshold in many union contracts. Some vaccine-hesitant people were also waiting until it was fully approved to get the shot. The FDA is still evaluating the Moderna shot and the Johnson and Johnson vaccine for full approval.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Monday, 8/23, that the coronavirus COVID-19 vaccine will be required for all public and private teachers and staff in grades preK-12. The deadline to be vaccinated in October 18. If any teacher or staff is not vaccinated, they must undergo testing one-two times per week. Also, all state employees must be vaccinated or be subject to testing. "Scientific data shows that vaccination and testing requirements, coupled with strong masking policies, are the best tools for keeping our schools and communities safe for in-person activities," Governor Murphy said. "As the school year rapidly approaches, my Administration is continuing to do all that we can to ensure a safe, full-time, in-person learning environment for our students, many of whom are not yet eligible for vaccination. Additionally, it is critically important to extend our vaccination and testing requirement to our State employees, so that they can continue to safely provide vital government services for the benefit of all New Jerseyans. We will continue to work collaboratively with school officials, teachers unions, and public-sector union partners over the next several weeks as this new requirement goes into effect."
