The 15-year-old girl who was shot in the head by stray gunfire while playing basketball at a Tioga-Nicetown rec center on Tuesday night, 8/17, has died. Philadelphia Police announced on Friday, 8/20, that Simone-Monea Rogers succumbed to her injuries. The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. at the Jerome Brown Playground at 20th and West Ontario Streets. Rogers was playing basketball with her brother and two friends at the time. She was shot once in the left side of her face and once in the right side of her face. Rogers was taken to Temple University Hospital where she passed away on Wednesday night. A 33-year-old woman was also shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police are looking at available surveillance video and want to talk to witnesses to determine the direction of the shots. No weapons were recovered and no arrests have been made. Rogers turned 15 a week ago. She was going to be a freshman as West Catholic.

Yardley Borough Police Chief Joseph Kelly was released from the hospital on Thursday, 8/19, and is expected to make a full recovery after being shot by a suspect on Wednesday, 8/18, during a call to assist. It happened late morning Wednesday at the Yardley Commons apartment complex on South Main Street. Two probation officers went to check on 24-year-old Colin Petroziello. They called for assist when they heard a domestic disturbance at the location. Kelly was in the area and responded. Petroziello shot Kelly through the front door with a shotgun, striking his hand and ear. The suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment for another few hours before SWAT made entry and arrested him. Petroziello was charged with attempted homicide of an officer, two counts of attempted murder, six counts of aggravated assault, and one count for each law enforcement officer, persons not to possess a firearm, false imprisonment, recklessly endangering another person and possession of an instrument crime.

The City of Philadelphia has appealed a judge's ruling that a statue of Christopher Columbus can stay at Marconi Plaza on South Broad Street. Common Pleas Court Judge Paula Patrick said that the city tried to remove the statue without 'legal status' and insufficient evidence. The statue remains covered in a wooden box in the South Philadelphia park. It was the site of a few clashes between groups of protestors with police in the middle during last year's citywide unrest.
