American track star Sha'Carri Richardson will not be able to compete in the 100 m at the Olympics in Tokyo next month after she failed a recent drug test. Richardson was the first place finisher in the women's 100m at the United States Olympic trials two weeks ago with a time of 10.86 seconds. The race was held at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR, on June 19. Richardson tested positive for marijuana. She received a 30-day suspension after completing a counseling program. She will be eligible to compete again on July 27. She may be able to return to appear on the Olympic 4x100 relay, but that has not been decided. The inclusion of marijuana on the list of banned substances on an anti-doping test is controversial, how it is 'performance enhancing?' It is still the rule. 21-year-old Richardson did not deny that she used it and took responsibility for it. She told the TODAY show on Friday morning, 7/2, "I just want to take responsibility for my actions, I know what I did. I know what I’m supposed to do and what I’m allowed not to do, and I still made that decision. But I'm not making an excuse or looking for any empathy in my case." She said she was under stress and wanted to hide her pain. She felt the stress to perform and the stress from her biological mom passing away. She tweeted, “I am human.”

"The rules are clear, but this is heartbreaking on many levels; hopefully, her acceptance of responsibility and apology will be an important example to us all that we can successfully overcome our regrettable decisions, despite the costly consequences of this one to her," U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis T. Tygart said.
