A Philadelphia police officer was shot and a suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop in North Philadelphia on Wednesday evening, 4/7. It happened around 6:45 p.m. on the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue in the Logan neighborhood. Two officers pulled over a blue Kia Optima with three men and one woman inside. The officers called for backup when some of the occupants came back with active warrants after running their IDs through the system. When backup arrived, the now five officers approached the vehicle and ordered the 24-year-old male sitting in the rear passenger side to step out. That suspect produced a gun and started firing at the officers. He hit one officer in the foot. Police returned fire and struck the man several times in the torso. He was taken to nearby Einstein Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The injured officer is recovering at the hospital. A weapon was recovered. The identities of the suspect and the officer have not been released. The three other occupants of the car and other officers were unharmed. The initial reason for the traffic stop is not known. "For someone to shoot at a police officer is very telling and it makes you wonder, not only what was going on in their mind at the time, but what is it that they're trying to get away from," said Commissioner Danielle Outlaw during a press briefing after the shooting.

UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as James Alexander. He had a warrant for bail jumping out of Wisconsin. The car was pulled over for running a stop sign.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office announced today that a member of the Ocean City Police Department is facing sexual assault charges after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a juvenile. 50-year-old Tyrone Rolls of Marmora, Upper Township, is charged with two counts of official misconduct and single counts of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, child endangerment and aggravated assault of a domestic violence victim. He is currently a police sergeant with the Ocean City Police Department. He is being held at Cape May County Correctional Center pending a detention hearing.

Delaware State Police are investigating after an ATV crash killed a 16-year-old girl and injured four other teens. It happened on Tueday, 4/6, around 6:45 p.m. in a private driveway off Robinsonville road in Lewes, DE. The 5 girls were riding in a John Deere Gator ATV. The vehicle has two passenger seats side-by-side with seatbelts and a rear bed. The configuration of the passengers is not known. The driver attempted to make a left turn at a high rate of speed. The ATV began to skid and slid off the driveway. It then overturned and hit a tree before landing on its roof. All five occupants were ejected from the ATV. The 16-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old girl and 15-year-old girl suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital by helicopter. They are now in stable condition. A 16-year-old and 17-year-old girl suffered minor injuries. They were taken to the hospital, treated, and released. The investigation is ongoing.
