A former Lehigh University student has been sentenced to seven to 20 years in state prison after he admitted to poisoning his roommate with a heavy metal in an attempt to kill him. 24-year-old Yukai Yang pled guilty to the attempted murder of Juwan Royal. All other charges were dropped as part of a plea deal. Yang will be deported back to China after he serves his sentence. Yang had purchased thallium and put it in his roommate's food and drink causing weight loss, headaches, and nausea. He had previously been charged with ethnic intimidation for writing racist graffiti in their dorm room. The two had lived together for years. Royal had suggested he considered moving out, and Yang couldn't handle it. Yang was apologetic at sentencing. "I cannot undo the damage to your body," Yang said. "I cannot erase the pain I caused your family. I am here today to accept the punishment I deserve."

A judge has acquitted the father of a 7-year-old boy who was selling candy when he killed after falling between moving subway cars in September 2018, however he convicted the family friend that was with the boy on the train that day. Common Pleas Court Judge J. Scott O'Keefe acquitted 39-year-old Troy Devlin of endangering the welfare of his son. Judge O'Keefe found 28-year-old Jahras Edwards guilty of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and reckless endangerment. He was acquitted of third-degree murder and conspiracy. 7-year-old Aden Devlin was with his older brother and Edwards on SEPTA's Broad Street Line on September 23, 2018 selling fruit snacks. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Wednesday, 3/24, that he wants all schools to resume in-person instruction by the coming fall. "Now is the time for all of our schools to meaningfully move forward with a return to in-person instruction whether it be full-time or through a hybrid schedule," Murphy said. "I want to be unequivocal about this. We are expecting, Monday through Friday in person, every school every district," Murphy said. That means no virtual-only option. Following new CDC guidance, students will be placed 3-feet apart in classrooms. If there is high community spread, they'll be moved to 6-feet. Common areas will be 6-feet. Masks and hand washing are still important. This is still 6 months away in September. Currently, New Jersey is seeing an uptick and has the highest rate of new positive cases in the US.
