Punxsutawney Phil Sees His Shadow, Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter! Groundhog Day 2/2/21

Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair on top of Gobbler's Knob in the tiny town 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, 2/2/21, and saw his shadow. The furry prognosticator told his top hat handlers called the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle that we should expect six more weeks of winter! Normally, there would be a crowd of 1,000s gathered in Punxsutawney to celebrate, but the coronavirus COVID-19 forced the festivities to go virtual.

According to legend, if it is sunny and the groundhog sees his shadow he'll become frightened and run back in his burrow, signifying winter will continue for six more weeks. If it is cloudy, then no shadow and he'll stay outside for an early spring. Phil has only predicted an early spring 20 times in the 135-year history of Groundhog Day. (see all-time records)

Phil's official proclamation this Groundhog Day:

Here Ye, Here Ye, Here ye

Now this second day of February, two thousand and twenty-one, the one hundred and thirty fifth annual trek of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club…

Punxsutawney Phil, the Seer of Seers, the Prognosticator of all Prognosticators, was awakened from his borrow at 7:25 am by his handler and friend, on this quiet morning where few can attend.

In Groundhogese, Phil directed the President and the Inner Circle to his prediction scroll that reads.

It is a beautiful morning this I can see,
With all my fans viewing virtually.
With my faithful followers being safe and secure,
Our tradition of Groundhog Day must endure.
We all have passed through the darkness of night,
But now see hope of morning’s bright light.
When I turn to see, there is a perfect shadow cast of me.
Six more weeks of winter there will be!
