Ex-Atlantic City Mayor Frank Gilliam Sentenced; Outlaw Defends Controller Report; Camden Hit-and-Run

Former Atlantic City mayor Frank Giliam was sentenced on Thursday, 1/28, to 30 days in prison and 11 months of house arrest for stealing $87,000 from a youth basketball program he founded. Gillian resigned as mayor in October 2019 when he pled guilty to wire fraud. He could have been sentenced to two years in federal prison. "I stand before this court as a fractured human being, one seeking to do better," a sobbing Gilliam told the judge over a video link. "It's something I wish never happened. But it did. The mistake I made is not something I'm proud of." "I'm ashamed, I'm embarrassed," said Gilliam, 49. "I've hurt people who love me, I've hurt people who depended on me." Gilliam solicited donations for his charities, but instead used the money for clothing, trips, and dining. Gilliam is ineligible to hold public office again.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw held a press conference on Thursday afternoon, 1/28, to respond to the report released by City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart regarding the city's response to unrest last year. The city commissioned its own independent investigation that was released in December. This new report says that those in charge, like the mayor and police chief, lacked 'leadership.' Outlaw defended herself and her actions and has no plans to resign. "Of course, some of the findings contained in both reports are difficult to face. However, the PPD is a learning organization and reports such as these provide us with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of previous shortcomings," Outlaw said. "Am I enough? Absolutely and some. Do I deserve to be here? Absolutely and some. Did I lead this department in the last year? Absolutely and some," Outlaw said. "No police commissioner, chief, superintendent has ever had to deal with what we dealt in the past year. And quite frankly, I think we are not only moving into 2021 stronger, but we're doing a good job with what we have."

Authorities in Camden County, NJ, are looking for a hit-a-run driver that struck and killed a man on Wednesday night, 1/27. It happened just before 10 p.m. on the 2600 block of Mt. Ephraim Ave. 46-year-old Lawrence Lloyd was crossing the street when he was hit by a speeding silver Ford Escape. The driver did not stop. Lloyd was taken to the hospital where he died. Police say it was a 2001-2007 model. "It should be missing the driver's side mirror and damage to the front of the vehicle," Rowand said. "We know the driver's side headlight was damaged," said Camden County Detective Douglas Rowand. If you have any information, please contact CCPO Det. Douglas Rowand at 856-225-8514 or Camden County Police Sgt. Gary Wilson at 609-519-8264. (see picture of vehicle below)
