President-elect Joe Biden has selected Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine to be his assistant secretary of health. She could be the first openly transgender federal official confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Levine, a pediatrician by training, was appointed to her current position by PA Governor Tom Wolf in 2017. She was confirmed by the Republican-majority PA Senate. Levine has been the public face of the state's coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic fight.

"Dr. Rachel Levine will bring the steady leadership and essential expertise we need to get people through this pandemic - no matter their zip code, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability - and meet the public health needs of our country in this critical moment and beyond," Biden said in a statement. "She is a historic and deeply qualified choice to help lead our administration's health efforts."

A Harrisburg woman that allegedly took part in the riot at the Capitol earlier this month and has been accused of taking a computer device from Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office in now in custody. Riley June Williams was arrested sometime on Monday in the Middle District of Pennsylvania after surrendering to authorities. She is currently charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. She is not charged with the theft at the moment. An ex partner of Williams called the FBI after seeing a video of her taking a laptop from the Speaker's office. He said that she intended to send it to a friend in Russia who would then sell it to that country's intelligence agency. That deal fell through. The ex told the FBI that Williams either still has the computer or destroyed it. Drew Hammill, Pelosi's deputy chief of staff, confirmed on January 8 that a laptop was taken but that "it was a laptop that was only used for presentations." The FBI is still investigating that matter.

UPDATE: Williams could face two more charges related to the theft of the laptop. Federal authorities are preparing charges of stealing government property and aiding and abetting. Those charges need to be approved in Washington, D.C.

Authorities in Monroe County, PA, issued 'Shelter in Place' warnings on Monday night, 1/18, after a series of shootings in Coolbaugh Township. Four people were injured and five people are in custody following the incidents at multiple locations on the Route 196 corridor in the Pocono Mountains. 22-year-od Laron Watson, 21-year-old Solidin Hamilton, 19-year-old Aja Nay Watson, and a 16-year-old boy face numerous charges including attempted homicide and aggravated assault. 20-year-old Jahlayah Blondell is charged with hindering apprehension. A 47-year-old woman was shot in the back and a 19-year-old man was wounded in the arm, probably a case of mistaken identity. A 20-year-old was found shot in the leg. Another 20-year-old was in a car shot in the head. They are all in stable condition. "We do not feel that the community is in any further danger, and we believe that we have all the suspects in custody at this time," Pocono Mountain Regional Police Chief Chris Wagner. It appears to have been an altercation between two groups.
