Dick Thornburgh, former Pennsylvania governor and US Attorney General, passed away on Thursday morning, 12/31, at a retirement community facility outside Pittsburgh. He was 88. Thornburgh was governor of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1987. During that time he had to deal with the Three Mile Island partial nuclear meltdown disaster in March 1979. President Ronald Regan appointed him US Attorney General at the end of his second term and he continued in that role under President George H.W. Bush.

The minimum wage in New Jersey will increase to $12 per hour on Friday, 1/1, for most employees. Governor Phil Murphy signed the law in February 2019 to gradually increase the minimum wage from $8.85 to $15 in 2024. It goes up by $1 each year. After it reaches $15 the wage will increase annually based on the consumer price index. This year's increase is going on as scheduled despite the economic landscape brought on by the pandemic. The extra pay will help workers, but the extra payroll could strain struggling small businesses. Seasonal workers, farm workers, and gratuity workers will also have increases, just at different rates.

A woman was seriously injured after violent crash in Delaware County on Thursday afternoon, 12/31. It happened around 2:30 p.m. on Conchester Highway near Cherry Tree Road in Upper Chichester Township. Police had responded to a report of disorderly conduct at a gas station in the area. When an officer arrived, he witnessed a man trying to pull a woman out of a car. The officer and the suspect had a scuffle. The officer tried to use his Taser but it did not work. The suspect then jumped into the officer's patrol car and took off. He crossed into opposing traffic and hit an SUV head on causing it to lift into the air. The 47-year-old female driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The suspect was also taken to the hospital. He faces numerous charges.
