New 'Crown' BLM Mural on Philly MSB Building; Philly Jacob Blake Protest; Trans Woman Beaten at Home

Philadelphia officials unveiled a new mural above the entrance to the Municipal Services Building across from City Hall in Center City. The painting was created in conjunction with the Mural Arts program. Artist Russell Craig says, "I came up with the crown design. Corona translates to English, crown. So, I took the protesters and put them in a formation of a crown so we can remember the protest." Only three months ago, the MSB building was at the center of the unrest immediately following George Floyd's death. Thousands of protestors clashed with police outside this entrance, police cars were set on fire, looting broke out on Chestnut Street, and eventually the statue of Frank Rizzo was removed from the plaza. "We have a long road ahead of us but I am confident that if we work together, we are going to achieve our goal, true equity of all Philadelphians," said Mayor Jim Kenney. "It's a beacon, a source of pride and inspiration and more importantly, it's a place where healing can begin," said Jane Golden with Mural Arts Philadelphia.

Several dozen demonstrators gathered at Dilworth Park in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, 8/26, to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, WI. After rallying next to City Hall, they marched down Broad Street and Walnut. 29-year-old Blake was shot in the back and paralyzed during an arrest on Sunday night, 8/23. The incident was captured on cell phone video. Large protests and riots have broken out over several days in Wisconsin. The Philadelphia Police had a larger presence in Center City for tonight's protest, but it was small and remained peaceful. Players from the NBA, WNBA, MLB, and MLS went on strike and boycotted playing their games on Wednesday. Entire teams did not take the court/field.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice has released an initial statement on the incident.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a transgender woman was beaten inside her home on Monday night, 8/24. It happened around 11 p.m. on the 1200 block of S. 22nd Street in Point Breeze. 34-year-old Kendall Stephens was at home with her husband, 12-year-old goddaughter, and another child. She heard people outside causing a ruckus, yelling and throwing bottles. Stephens opened the door to tell them to stop or she'd call 911. The group of people began to attack her. They kicked in the door, hit her in the face, and made disparaging remarks about being trans. Stephens suffered a broken nose, swollen lips, and sore jaw. Police are searching for the suspects. They do have surveillance footage from Stephens' front door cam. If you have any information call police at 215-686-TIPS.
