Philly Protest Camps Were Not Cleared; Man on Roof Fire w/ Cinder Block; PA Masks On Kids

Philadelphia city officials had given residents of two protest encampments until 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, 8/18, to clear out, but that deadline has passed and the camps are still there. They are located at 22nd Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway and also at 20th Street and Ridge Avenue near the Philadelphia Housing Authority headquarters. Mayor Jim Kenney said on Monday, 8/17, that further negotiations with camp representatives would not be 'fruitful' and gave the order to clear them. The city said they agreed on some of the demands of the encampment including having a sanctioned camp, tiny houses, and a community land trust, but talks had broken down. The mayor said some of the demands were outside the scope of the city's power. The homeless protesters had always been offered services including shelter, safe haven, and treatment beds from outreach workers.

This morning the activists at the camp formed a barrier blocking part of the road and seemed ready to defend themselves. There has not been a confrontation. Philadelphia officials did not move it to take over the camps. An injunction has been filed in federal court to try and stop the City from evicting the camp. Several City Councilmembers have asked the Mayor to hold off.

UPDATE: Organizers and City officials are meeting this afternoon. It seems that the encampments won't be dispersed today.

UPDATE: The camps will stay for now. There will be an emergency hearing with a Federal judge on Thursday.

An hours long standoff ended early Tuesday morning, 8/18, in Delaware County following an arson fire and negotiations with a distraught man. It started around 10 p.m. Monday, 8/17, on the 700 block of Windsor Circle in Folcroft. Firefighters responded to a small row house fire. They put out the fire and then realized there was a man on the roof. The homeowner had a rope around his neck tied to a cinder block and was pouring gasoline on himself. The man in his 30s set the house on fire again and was pacing back and forth while yelling and threatening to jump. Police and SWAT arrived at the scene. An airbag was placed next to the house in case the man jumped. SWAT eventually took the man into custody around 3 a.m. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and faces multiple charges including arson.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education in cooperation with the Department of Health announced on Tuesday, 8/18, that students returning to school this fall will be required to wear masks or face coverings at all times while inside school buildings even when they are able to maintain 6 feet of distance. This applies to all staff, students, and visitors to all public and private schools PreK-12. Students can remove their mask to eat or during "face covering breaks." The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated their guidance. They now strongly recommend children age two and older wear face coverings at all times. Parents should get kids ready for wearing a mask all day. Teach them how to put it on and off and adjust it.
