The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Board of Directors met on Friday afternoon, 8/7, after Governor Tom Wolf announced on Thursday that he 'strongly recommends' that there be no K-12 interscholastic or recreational sports until January 1st. Wolf's statement came as a surprise and was given at the end of a press conference as a response to a question about parental attendance at games. Today, the PIAA said that it will pause mandatory workouts for fall sports for two weeks, but that voluntary workouts can continue. The board will reconvene on August 21.

The PIAA approved fall sports last month using guidance from individual sports steering committees and the PIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. It still believes that it safely sponsor fall sports. The PIAA also believes that delaying sports until January 1 "has a potential negative impact on the students' physical, social, emotional and mental health." The Board is asking to sit down with the Governor and Department of Health and Education to discuss fall sports.

Upper Darby Township announced on Friday, 8/7, that regular once per week trash pick up will resume on Monday, August 10th, after hiring a private company. All township sanitation trucks and offices were sanitized this morning and will be ready for Monday. All Upper Darby sanitation workers had to be quarantined for 14 days after a coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. Mayor Barbarann Keffer said on Thursday, 8/6, to expect the announcement of the details of contingency plan on Monday, 8/10, but part of that plan was issued today. Also, regular trash pick-up and recycling will resume with a new schedule on Monday, August 24, when the workers return.

UPDATE: A combination of union workers and a private company will recollecting trash in Upper Darby starting on Monday, 8/10. "Working together with TWU Local 234 and a private company, we were able to secure a combination work force of CDL drivers and laborers to ensure continuity of service," Mayor Keffer wrote. "We will be using Township trash trucks which were professionally sanitized Friday."

There is now a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shooting of a 6-year-old girl in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night, 8/5. It happened on the 900 block of 42nd Street. The girls was outside playing with friends when she was caught in the crossfire and shot in the chest. The girl was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition. The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 is putting up the reward. If you have any information, call police.
