Philly Live Events Coalition City Hall Rally; Fatal Shooting at NJ Doctor's; NJ Gym Held Contempt

The live events industry was the first to come to a screeching halt in mid-March, is still completely shutdown (no working from home), and will likely be the last to come back and likely not be the same. It is made up of hundreds of thousands of workers that are behind every concert, theatrical production, festival, sporting event, wedding, conference, and banquet. They include performers, tour managers, stagehands, lighting designers, sound techs, DJs, ushers, production managers, florists, caterers, and talent buyers. The Philadelphia chapter of the Live Events Coalition held a rally on Friday, 7/24, at City Hall to advocate for help from Congress for the industry. Dozens of workers pushed stage cases around City Hall. It could be well into 2021 before the industry starts to operate again. The advocates are asking for an extension of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL).

A man has been arrested at a New Jersey doctor's office after an employee was killed and a patient was injured in a shooting on Friday afternoon. 51-year-old Bruce Gomola Jr. of Burlington Township is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. It happened around 1 p.m. at Delaware Valley Urology on the 15000 block of Midlantic Drive in Mount Laurel. Gomola had become upset about something to do with his father's appointment. 44-year-old patient services representative Stephanie Horton of Willingboro attempted to discuss the situation with Gomola. He pulled out a .40 caliber handgun and shot her in the chest. The bullet also struck another patient in the knee. Horton was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden and was pronounced dead at 4:18 p.m. The patient was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. Gomola surrendered peacefully when police arrived. He works as a corrections officer at the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly.

A state judge ruled on Friday, 7/23, that a Bellmawr, NJ, gym was in contempt of court by not following orders to keep the gym closed amid a statewide shutdown. Atilis Gym has repeatedly defied Governor Phil Murphy's business closure orders as well as site specific health department orders by keeping the doors open to members of the fitness center. The owners have received numerous citations and summonses, but keep vowing to fight for their rights. They have taken numerous safety precautions inside the facility to ensure sanitation and social distancing. This judge's ruling authorizes the state health department to put locks on the doors and put up barriers to ensure compliance.
