Mail Line Mansion Destroyed, Reassessment Plan Questioned, G-Boys Closes.

Bloomfield, known to neighbors as The Old Ewing Estate, a huge historic Mail Line mansion was destroyed by a fire yesterday. The Villanova estate had 19 bedrooms, 12 and a half baths in over 22,000 square feet. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The estate served as the set for a movie called "Safe" to be released later this month. The mansion was located on S. Ithan Ave near Villanova's South Campus.

Philadelphia City Council is concerned about Mayor Nutter’s plan to reassess properties. Council’s fear is that longtime residents will experience sticker shock when they see their new tax bill. Of particular concern are Philadelphia’s blue collar neighborhoods that have recently become very desirable places to live.

The G-Boys is closing. The South Jersey landmark garden center on Route 70 in Marlton has closed its doors. The G Boys was a traditional Christmas season destination for Philadelphia area families since the 1960’s for their displays, shopping and of course, Santa Claus.

More on Bloomfield Mansion... The French Chateau was redesigned by Horace Trumbauer in 1923. Trumbauer was a famed architect from Philadelphia who also designed the Philadelphia Museum Of Art and Arcadia University.

It is currently owned by Jerald S. Batoff, of Bala Cynwyd. The property was recently for sale between $5.9-6.9 million. It was being rented by a couple who escaped harm from the fire along with their maid, two dogs, and rabbit.

The fire started in the third floor. There was a previous fire on the third floor in 1978, but the house was rebuilt.
