Jazz Appreciation Month is set aside every April "to draw greater public attention to the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz and its importance as an American cultural heritage. In addition, JAM is intended to stimulate the current jazz scene and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz". It was started in 2002 by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. This marks the second year that Philadelphia is officially joining in JAM activities.

Jazz is America's only native music genre and spans borders and cultures, crossing racial lines well before those lines were crossed civically. This year's poster features Frank Sinatra who influenced history through music.
