Atilis Gym in Bellmawr Shut Down by Health Dept; Man/Woman Shot in Frankford; Cap/Gown Delivery

Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, Camden County, New Jersey, was closed on Thursday, 5/21, by health officials after it had defied state emergency orders and opened its doors for business this week. The New Jersey Department of Health issued the order after the gym had reopened to members on Monday, 5/18, through Wednesday, 5/20. The owners were cited and given summons by Bellmawr police each day and several gym members were also cited after using the facility. Atilis Gym was operating with a variety of social distancing and sanitation protocols, but the heath order says these measures are not sufficient at this time considering the level of community spread, the indoor congregate nature of the gym, and simply because the state has not yet approved it. The order states that no members of the public, including members of the gym, are allowed inside the building. The closure remains in effect until it is lifted by the department. The owners plan to fight the health department order and appeal. They also plan to open on Friday. Defiance of the order can result in criminal and civil penalties. See order below.

A man and a woman were found shot to death inside of a Frankford home on Wednesday evening, 5/20. Police went to the home on the 4700 block of Tacony Street shortly after 5 p.m. to perform a wellfare check. The female hadn't shown up for work for a week. They found the the 37-year-old woman on the floor next to her bed shot three times. They found the 43-year-old man in the hallway with a gunshot to the head. They were both pronounced dead at the scene. A gun was recovered from the hallway near the man. "We're not certain at this time if this is a double homicide. We're not going to rule out the possibility that this may be a murder-suicide due to the fact that the male victim had a handgun next to his body," said Chief Inspector Scott Small with the Philadelphia Police Department. The investigation is ongoing.

The School District of Philadelphia is now exploring ways to safely distribute caps and gowns to graduating seniors. Earlier this week, the district told students that had purchased the graduation package that it could not deliver the items because they would be violating stay-at-home orders. The package would eventually be delivered, but not until the lockdown was lifted. Seniors argued that would be too late. The district's online graduation ceremony will be held June 9 at 11 a.m. There will be student speakers, Mayor Kenney, an unnamed 'special guest,' and more. Some wondered how the district can safely hand out 80,000 Chromebooks and 1000's of free meals every week, but can't get caps and gowns to seniors who purchased them. No word yet on the exact distribution plan.
