Liacouras Center Field Hospital to Close Down; Delco Stray Cat Shot w/ Arrow; Seth Williams Freed

Philadelphia officials announced that it will begin to phase out the field hospital that was built inside the Liacouras Center as a coronavirus COVID-19 surge facility. There are only 5 patients currently at the facility. It will close as soon as those last patients are discharged, most likely by next week.

"With few patients, a stabilizing of the number of cases within the community, and sufficient bed capacity at existing hospitals, I do not see the need for a surge facility in the foreseeable future. The city is grateful to Temple University for its willingness to host this facility. Everyone involved is thankful that we are at a point where it is not needed at this time. Please help us keep it that way, by continuing to follow social distancing and other guidelines," Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said.

Temple and the City of Philadelphia reached an agreement around March 27 to use the Liacouras Center. Temple offered the space for free. FEMA and the National Guard put up the hospital with 180 beds. It first opened on April 16. The first patient arrived on April 20. There were never more than a handful of patients treated at the facility at one time.

A stray cat, now named Beau, is recovering at the Providence Animal Center in Media, Delaware County, after being shot with an arrow over the weekend. A Humane Society officer brought the cat to the center after it was found in Darby on Saturday. He had been shot through the shoulder with a 7-inch arrow, probably from a crossbow. "Right now, he's being monitored around the clock by our medical team and receiving stabilizing medication that also reduces any pain he may feel from the injury," the center said in a statement. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Providence Animal Center's Humane Law Enforcement team at 610-566-1370 x 214.

Former Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams has been released early from federal prison in Morgantown, West Virginia, and is now under community custody in the Philadelphia area. He is under operational control of the Philadelphia Residential Reentry Management field office and is being monitored. Williams was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison as part of a plea deal in October 2017. He pled guilty to one count of bribery while 28 other charges were dropped. He was accused of taking gifts and cash in exchange for political favors. He was accused of using campaign money for personal expenses and using city vehicles for personal trips. He was also accused of mismanaging his elderly mother's money. Williams' sentence would have ended in September 2022, but he received 1-year for good behavior and 1-year for completing a Residential Drug Abuse Program. Robert Zauzmer, the lead prosecutor on the case, said, "Williams' sentence is therefore presently scheduled to end on September 30, 2020, and he was recently transferred to community confinement as is customary for inmates nearing the end of a term of imprisonment." Williams was not freed early because of concerns of overcrowding in federal prisons due to coronavirus COVID-19. He still faces 3 years probation and restitution.
