President Trump to Suspend Immigration; Archdiocese Distributes Computers; Center City Burglaries

President Donald Trump announced on Monday night, 4/20, in a tweet that he would be signing an executive order temporarily suspending immigration into the United States. He said that he was taking action because of coronavirus COVID-19 and to protect American's jobs. He gave no other details. He tweeted, "In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!"

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has started to distribute over 720 Chromebooks to parish and regional elementary schools and secondary schools in the City of Philadelphia who are in need. The computers will be given out to representatives of 16 schools on Monday and Tuesday by the Technology Team from the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Education (OCE). The computers were blessed by Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez prior to distribution. Parish and regional elementary schools, secondary schools, and schools of special education moved to flexible instruction on March 16th. The Catholic Education Coronavirus Task Force was established on March 13 to help provide guidance to parish and regional elementary schools, secondary schools, and schools of special education throughout the five-county Archdiocese in dealing with the COVID-19 virus.

Burglaries at retailers in Center City have been more noticeable in the past few weeks. Stores are shuttered under non-essential business closure orders. City streets are also empty as people are ordered to stay-at-home. Many stores have opted to board up storefronts and window displays like a hurricane was approaching. Those plywood boards may be a target for graffiti or posters, but at least the business inside is protected. Some stores that did not board up have seen rocks or bricks thrown through their windows and merchandise in the window displays stolen. Clothing, sneakers, and jewelry are some of the common items taken. One man broke into a Ross store and just stole some fresh packs of men's underwear. Police have already caught some of the bandits.
