Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has authorized the temporary release of up to as many as 1,800 state prisoners under a newly established 'Temporary Program to Reprieve Sentences of Incarceration' program. "We can reduce our non-violent prison population and leave fewer inmates at risk for contracting COVID-19 while maintaining public safety with this program," Gov. Wolf said. "I am pleased to direct the Department of Corrections to begin the process to release vulnerable and non-violent inmates at or nearing their release dates in an organized way that maintain supervision post-release and ensures home and health care plans are in place for all reentrants."

The Department of Corrections will identify those prisoners eligible for release. They must be non-violent and be eligible for release within the next 9 months or who are considered at high risk for complications of coronavirus and are within 12 months of their release. These inmates will be released to half-way houses or to home confinement and will be monitored like parolees with parole agents. They will return to prison when the order expires. Out of 44,000 state inmates, between 1,500 - 1,800 are eligible. Releases could begin on Tuesday, April 14th.

Those incarcerated for certain crimes such as violent offenses, crimes committed with a firearm, drug trafficking and sexual offenses are not eligible. Also, those who have been denied parole or who have committed crimes inside prison are also not eligible.

A person is dead after exchanging gunfire with police in Montgomery County on Friday night, 4/10. It happened around 8:30 p.m. on the 300 block of West King Street in Pottstown. Authorities say they received at least three separate 911 calls about neighbors loudly arguing. When officers arrived they found a person with a handgun. That person opened fire on police. Officers returned fire and struck the individual. They were taken to Pottstown Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

New Jersey State police have charged three teenagers for throwing an object off an overpass of the New Jersey Turnpike that injured a truck driver last month. A 17-year-old from Elmer, a 16-year-old from Penns Grove, and a 16-year-old from Pittsgrove are charged with aggravated assault, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct. It happened on March 26 on the turnpike in Carneys Point, Salem County. The teens had apparently thrown a cider block from the Penns Grove Auburn Road overpass and struck two tractor-trailers, smashing both of their windshields. One of the drivers was taken to the hospital with injuries to his face and eyes. The teens will be arrested and processed at a later date due to coronavirus restrictions.
