PA Governor Tom Wolf Closes Schools For Rest of Year; PIAA Cancels Winter Champs and Spring Sports

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced on Thursday, 4/9, that all schools in the commonwealth will remain closed through the end of the school year as defined by the local school calendars. He made the decision after consulting with Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine and Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera. "We must continue our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus during this national crisis," Governor Wolf said. "This was not an easy decision but closing schools until the end of the academic year is in the best interest of our students, school employees and families." The order applies to all public K-12 schools, brick and mortar and cyber charter schools, private and parochial schools, career and technical centers and intermediate units. Colleges and universities may not resume until the closure of non-life-sustaining businesses is lifted or the governor allows. Although school buildings will be shuttered for the remainder of the academic year, "schools are strongly encouraged to provide continuity of education for all students in the most appropriate and accessible ways possible." This could be through the use of technology or even paper handouts where necessary. Also, meals will continue to be provided to students in need.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) has decided to shutdown all winter sports championships as of Wednesday, 4/8. Several winter sports were in the midst of their championship playoffs or meets in March when competition and practices were paused on March 12. Boys and Girls Basketball playoffs were in progress on multiple levels and the 2A Swimming and Diving championships were being held. This decision was made before schools were closed for the remainder of the year on Thursday morning, 4/9. There has not been word yet on the fate of spring sports, but another statement is expected from the PIAA on Thursday afternoon. The PIAA administers high school sports in Pennsylvania.

UPDATE: The PIAA announced on Thursday afternoon, 4/9, that all Spring sports/championships have been canceled for the remainder of the school year.
