63 Philadelphia Schools Closed on Friday Due to Staffing Shortages

The School District of Philadelphia announced on Thursday night, 3/12, that 63 schools would be closed on Friday, 3/13, due to staffing shortages. The shortages were a result of fallout from the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. Earlier in the day, Governor Tom Wolf ordered mass closings of schools, gyms, community centers, and entertainment centers in Montgomery County and urged county residents to restrict unnecessary travel. Officials say that 15% of the staff at the 63 affected schools live in Montgomery County.

"Since the onset of the coronavirus situation in the Philadelphia area, it has been the goal of our School District to safely keep our doors open as long as possible," Superintendent William Hite said in a statement. "The Philadelphia communities we serve rely on us for the many public school services we provide, including breakfast and lunch meals, shelter and health services. Unfortunately, the current set of circumstances make it difficult for us to keep all of our schools open."
