Amtrak Suspends Acela Service Due to Coronavirus; 4-year-old Shot, Critically Injured in Olney

Amtrak is suspending its nonstop high-speed Acela service that runs between New York and Washington, D.C. between Tuesday, March 10 and Tuesday, May 26 as customer demand weakens due to concerns over the coronavirus (COVID-19). They will waive change fees on new or existing reservations made through April 30th. Riders can take the slower, northeast regional trains to travel between cities. "As we are experiencing some reduced demand for our service, we are making temporary adjustments to our schedule, such as removing train cars or cancelling trains when there is a convenient alternative with a similar schedule that will have minimal impact to customers," Amtrak said in a statement. Amtrak plans on "increasing the frequency of cleaning services to multiple times a day, and in some cases, on an hourly basis." They will also make hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes available on trains and in stations. For more information go to: amtrak.com.

A 4-year-old is in the hospital after being shot inside an Olney home on Saturday night, 3/7. It happened around 8 p.m. on the 5500 block of North 4th Street. Police say that a man in his 20s was inside the home playing with a group of children when a gun went off. The child was rushed to Einstein Medical Center in critical but stable condition. The suspect and a second man fled the scene in a vehicle. They are both known to the family, however, their exact relationship is not clear. No arrests have been made. Police are looking for the two men for questioning. They believe the shooting may be accidental. The investigation is on going.

UPDATE: A 23-year-old man has turned himself into police.
