Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Joe Sullivan announced on Friday, 1/31, that he was leaving the force effective immediately. Sullivan had been a member of the Philadelphia force for 38 years. He has said that his departure was "not my decision" and that he was told that his services "were no longer needed." As deputy commissioner he was not protected by union membership. More leadership changes are likely in the next few weeks as Danielle Outlaw is due to take over as the next police commissioner on February 10th.

Two men are dead and two others are in custody after an early morning robbery and shootout that played out at a Chester, Delaware County gas station. It happened around 4:20 a.m. Saturday, 2/1, at the Sunoco A Plus Mini Mart at Kerlin and West 9th Streets. It started inside the store as a fight. 21-year-old Jaquail Dale, 29-year-old Lamont Mallory, 29-year-old Tahriq Doward attacked and robbed 30-year-old Lasantos Saunders. Employees were able to get the attackers outside. Doward came back to the store and gunfire erupted between him and Saunders. Doward was struck and died at the scene. Saunders was also hit. He then got into his Chevy Impala and drove away. He was found inside the vehicle unresponsive about two blocks away at 10th and Concord Avenue. He died at Crozer Chester Medical Center. Dale and Mallory were arrested and charged with robbery, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and other related offenses. They have not been charged with homicide. Investigators determined Doward and Saunders shot each other.

A Philadelphia police officer has been arrested for falsely claiming that he was assaulted and injured by a suspect during an arrest in 2018. 35-year-old Officer Keith White of Warminster is charged with records tampering, unsworn falsification, false reports to law enforcement, and official oppression. During an April 2018 narcotics arrest, White claimed that the suspect hit him in the mouth during a struggle. Video of the incident showed the suspect lying on the ground and not resisting. White fell while chasing the suspect and may have sustained his injuries at that time. The 13-year veteran is suspended for 30 days with intent to dismiss.
