The Southern Delta Aquarids and the Alpha Capricornids will both peak across the Philadelphia region's skies on the nights of on July 29-30. Tonight's forecast is for clear skies and warm temperatures making great weather to catch the meteors streaking across the sky. The moon is also in a new phase which will eliminate it from causing any interference. It will be close to perfect conditions for seeing shooting stars for late July. The best time would be after midnight and close to dawn. The forecast for Tuesday into Wednesday is practically the same. Look forward to mid-August and the Perseids for even better meteor watching.

Meteor showers are produced as Earth's orbit crosses through the dust and debris trail left by comets on their way around the sun. Scientists believe that the Delta Aquarids are caused by debris left by comet 96P/Machholz, discovered in 1986 by an amateur astronomer named Dan Machholz. Haley's travels around the Sun every 76 years, last passing us in 1986. This meteor storm could bring as many as 25 per hour as we pass through the debris field with potentially higher bursts.

The best place to view the meteor show around Philadelphia would be any place away from the Center City lights and out in an open field. Even though the radiant point in the south-east sky, you can see them fly anywhere above. Watching later in the night closer to dawn should see the best results. Bring a blanket or something to lie down on. You'll want to rest your head and look up without straining. Patience is key.
