A pregnant mother and her 9-year-old son were killed after their car was swept away in flash floods in Berks County on Thursday, 7/11. It happened around 4:30 p.m. on Pine Forge Road in Douglass Township. 31-year-old Pamela Synder and her son Preston Dray became stranded in their Mazda after Snyder attempted to drive through flood waters overflowing from the nearby Manatawny Creek. She called 911 and told dispatchers that they were stuck and that water was rushing inside. She stayed on the line for 49 minutes as rescue crews fought to get to them. Douglass Township Chief John Dzurek said, "The fire department and the water rescue team even had difficulty getting in because just about every road in the township had some sort of obstacle and made rescue efforts extremely difficult." Dispatch eventually lost contact with Synder. It is believed that her car was swept off the road. The Mazda was found about a half mile away on the creek bed. The mother and son were found by divers. Synder was 8-months pregnant with a girl and the baby shower was this weekend. She was also engaged to be married this fall.

A carjacker who stole a car with three children inside was beaten to death in the streets after being chased down by the parents in Strawberry Mansion on Thursday night, 7/11. It happened around 9 p.m. near 29th and Dauphin streets. A 25-year-old mother parked her Hyundai sedan outside of New Star Pizza. She left the car running with her three children inside to go see the father at the pizza shop. 54-year-old Erik Hood jumped in the sedan and took off with the three kids. The father and mother both ran after the car, which got stuck in traffic a half block a way. The father pulled Hood out of the vehicle and got into a confrontation with the carjacker. "Hood managed to break free from the father and fled across 29th Street. It was at this time that a crowd of individuals stopped Mr. Hood and forced him to the ground," Smith said. "The crowd kicked and punched Mr. Hood until the arrival of responding police. At some point Mr. Hood became unresponsive." He was take to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m. The medical examiner will determine cause of death. The mother and father were taken in for questioning. No charges have been filed as of yet. Police are looking into Instagram and surveillance video from the incident. Hood had at least 24 prior arrests and convictions.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Mount Laurel, Burlington County, on Thursday evening, 7/11. That is the second tornado to hit Mount Laurel in the past week. This tornado touched down at 7:18 p.m. in the Ramblewood and Birchfield neighborhoods. It had maximum winds of 90 mph, traveled 1.3 miles, and a maximum width of 150 yards. It lasted until 7:21 p.m. Some trees were damaged and up rooted. There was also minor damage to some apartment buildings and a home. This twister was only 0.8 miles from the one on Saturday, 7/6. (see video).
