The first few hours after NBA free agency officially opened on Sunday evening, 6/30, there were a flurry of reported verbal deals across the league with big implications. There were plenty of players that defected from their current team to sign with a new one and hopefully a new opportunity. Some teams did a good job at attracting the talent on the open market, most notably the Brooklyn Nets, while the New York Knicks have received a fair amount of criticism. None of these deals are official, just promises, until next week when they can actually be signed on paper on July 6th.

The Philadelphia 76ers got into the action after some of the dust settled from the 6 pm start time. Three of the 76ers starters were unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Three point specialist J. J. Redick signed a two-year, $26.5 million with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Sixers were able to resign forward Tobias Harris to a five-year, $180 million contract.

It does not look like guard Jimmy Butler will be staying in Philadelphia. The Sixers are trying to work out a sign-and-trade deal to send Butler to the Miami Heat. The Heat would send guard Josh Richardson to Philly. The Dallas Mavericks are involved to absorb salary, but a deal announced on Sunday may fall through because Dallas expected to receive different players from Miami than was revealed later. Either way, Butler will probably be moved somewhere.

The team is also in talks with Ben Simmons on a contract extension.

Former Celtics F/C and five-time All Star Al Horford signed with the Sixers for four-years, $109 million. The contract is $97 million guaranteed with $12 million in bonuses depending on championships.

As it stands now the 76ers starting five looks like: Ben Simmons, Josh Richardson, Tobias Harris, Al Horford and Joel Embiid

UPDATE: The sign-and-trade deal involving Jimmy Butler is complete. Jimmy Butler is expected to sign a four-year, $142 million deal. He will go to the Miami Heat. The Heat will send Hassan Whiteside to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Heat will send Josh Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers. Maurice Harkless and a future first-round pick go to the Clippers. Meyers Leonard will go to the Heat.

Kyle O'Quinn has agreed to a 1-year, $2.1 million deal.
